PGS

Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS)

PGS enables the screening of cells from an embryo for genetic diseases that are inherited through pregnancy. PGS was initially offered to couples who were at risk of transmitting an inherited disorder to their unborn child.

As women are leaving motherhood until later. There is an increase in the number of women seeking treatment over the age of 40. However, with this group, there is a higher incidence of chromosomal abnormality in pregnancy. This can result in a child born with a genetic disease or an increase chance of miscarriage. PGS is now offered to women over 40. Women who have experienced multiple miscarriages can also be offered PGS.

The screening involves a woman having an IVF/ ICSI cycle. On day three of the embryos development a cell is extracted. This cell is checked for its full chromosomal compliment. The unaffected embryo/ embryos are replaced into the uterus within 48 hours following biopsy.
