What You Can Do - Female Fertility

Smoking

Smoking decreases fertility and therefore decreases chances of conceiving. It ages the body and therefore ages all organs in the body including the ovaries. Smoking also increases the risk of miscarriage, if a woman smokes when pregnant. It can also lead to babies born prematurely which in turn can lead to complications to the child’s health.

Alcohol

It is recommended when a woman is trying to conceive that she decreases her alcohol consumption to 5 units or under. A unit is equal to a small glass of wine, a single spirit measure or half a lager. Reducing alcohol consumption can increase conception. In addition drinking whilst pregnant can lead to complications such as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome which affects the baby’s development.
