Female Fertility

In order for a couple to optimise their chances of conceiving a healthy child it is important that both examine their diet and lifestyle prior to conception or treatment. Changing/ adapting lifestyles can not only increase fertility but can help to reduce complications with pregnancy.

Weight

It is important to follow a healthy balanced diet, see Nutrition. In addition, it important that a woman is not over weight or underweight as this can reduce chances of conception. Being under weight can affect the regularity of the menstrual cycle and may even cause anovulation. Being over weight can also decrease the chances of conceiving and increase the risk of miscarriage. It is important to ensure that your BMI (Body Mass Index) is within a normal range. To check your BMI follow the calculation below or use our BMI Calculator:

Weight (in kilos)/ Height (in metres)/ Height (in metres)

For example a woman weighing 58kilos, whose height is 1.53 has a BMI of 24.7 which is 58/1.53/1.53=24.7

A general guide is that a female’s ideal BMI range should be between 20-30.
